CalWEAR is Grounded

June 23, 2019 //  by Kim//  Leave a Comment

WE’RE GROUNDED.

Literally. Grounded. The WEIMBUS is out of commission for repairs, so we’re gonna hunker down, do some office work, and reach out about how everyone can help.

MEET HALLEE. Hallee (age 11) is another one who needs a new home through fault of her own. Her current owners are closing in on a new residence that doesn’t accommodate dogs. They don’t have anyone where else to send her.

WE NEED A FOSTER HOME FOR HALLEE. Have kids? Cool! Dogs? Great!

Given her age, and the fact that she’s on Rimadyl (for arthritis) and Proin (for bladder control), we are prepared to have her in the program for quite a bit of time.

Or maybe she’ll get adopted quickly because someone out there will see what a soulful girl she is. ❤️

Hit us up. Let’s get her HOME. 😊 [UPDATE: HALLEE’S OWNERS HAVE DECIDED NOT TO TURN HER INTO RESCUE.]

Author’s note: I have an 11 year old of my own. Her name is Friday and she is the love of my life. At her age, she still runs, hikes, and bosses the younger ones around the house. She also sleeps a lot and is a very easy keeper. At her age, she values most the couch (probably because the littles can’t reach her there). I’ll bet you Hallee is just as easy to have around the house. Please consider opening your heart and home to her, even if it’s only temporary. ❤️– Kim, for Team CalWEAR

Lara

November 28, 2018 //  by Kim//  Leave a Comment

Update: Lara’s family changed their mind about turning her over to rescue.

MEET LARA.

Location: Indio, CA

Lara is a beautiful, sweet six-year-old girl who was rescued almost three years ago by her current owner. (She had been abandoned and was found at the workplace.) Lara is spayed and up to date on all of her shots. Her favorite foods are peanut butter, peanut butter, and peanut butter. Bonus points if you stuff it into a Kong. In true princess fashion, she also nuzzles her people and whines for attention. Ever the debutante, she’s kind enough NOT to jump at people for attention. Ever the Weimaraner, she will, however, steal food if left in a semi-reachable place.

Lara has excellent recall, but prefers not to obey other basic commands; she challenges her next family to drill that into her. HA!

Lara is wonderful with other dogs, and is currently living in a house with a cat now. Interaction is only ‘visual,’ and on a full supervision basis. (We don’t recommend that Lara gets placed in a home with cats.)

Interested in fostering or adopting Lara?! Please submit an application via www.CalWEAR.org. Thank you! ❤️

Sissy

July 13, 2018 //  by Kim//  Leave a Comment

Update: CalWEAR worked on finding Sissy a home for a very long time. Once that new owner was found, Sissy’s original family never returned our messages, so ultimately, she was never turned over to rescue.

MEET SISSY.

Sissy comes to CalWEAR after being a victim of divorce and changed circumstances. Ten years old, one thousand percent potty trained (WILL NOT GO in the house even if she’s been in all day), great with kids, likes other dogs, and will accept a cat if the cat is dog-wise (she lives with a cat now who bosses her but she’ll chase after fearful kitties).

Please reach out to us at hello@CalWEAR.org if you have room for a sweet blue girl in your life! ❤️

Sven

May 20, 2018 //  by Kim//  Leave a Comment

Update: After a few months, Sven’s owner was able to find him a new home without having to turn him over to rescue.

MEET THE HANDSOME SVEN! Sven is a 3 year old neutered male Weimaraner and was born on September 13th, 2014. He has been a member of his family since he was 10 weeks old and has been a very loyal and loving dog. Unfortunately with some changes to the family makeup they no longer have the time to provide him with the attention and exercise he deserves.

Sven LOVES his physical activity and mental stimulation. He loves his morning runs. He thrives on being a productive member of the pack and strives to please others. His high energy is perfect for the active family who is willing to devote time with him each day. Sven is good with adults and older children. Families with young children or small animals are not recommended.

Sven does have some challenges and has shown signs of anxiety and food aggression resulting in several superficial bites to his fellow Weimaraner in the home as well as once to his owner. None of the incidents would be considered level 4 but the new family should be aware. Sven can also get stressed when strangers come to the house and when he’s left alone for long hours so additional time will need to be spent to help with his anxiety. A trainer has been consulted and is currently working with him to correct these behaviors. She has stated her optimism in helping Sven overcome these behavioral challenges.

Sven is highly intelligent and has learned a number of behaviors including: sit, wait, lie-down, roll over, place (going to a specific spot and waiting), shake, stand and touch. He is house trained and has no problem holding it through the night. He loves to snuggle up at the foot of your bed and being under lots of blankets.

Interested in meeting Sven? Please contact us at hello@CalWEAR.org to meet him. He is currently living with his originating family in Santee. THANK YOU!

Long Beach Weim/Pit Bull Mix Needs Rescue

December 16, 2017 //  by Kim//  Leave a Comment

MEET SARA. Sara is a Weimaraner mix who was impounded as a stray. She had escaped once before (in August of this year) and Long Beach officers successfully reunited her with her owner. This time, she was brought to the shelter and no owner came to redeem her. She is very active and needs a new family.

Please reach out to us at hello@CalWEAR.org if you might be interested. Thank you!

Update: The shelter was able to place Sara before CalWEAR intervened.

Meet Brownie

November 22, 2017 //  by Kim//  Leave a Comment

MEET BROWNIE. Brownie is a seven year old girl who is good with adults, children, and other dogs. (We don’t know about cats.) She’s not aggressive and never bit anyone, but according to her previous family, she WILL DESTROY YOUR LEATHER GOODS, especially if you leave them out for her to find. She’s otherwise a sweet gem of a dog. Spayed, friendly, housebroken, and up to date on her vaccinations.

Have an aversion to leather? Fearful of animal products? Need someone to get rid of it for you?! Please give us a shout at hello@CalWEAR.org.

Cheers! ❤️

Fairytale Ending Alert

September 14, 2017 //  by Kim//  Leave a Comment

September 14, 2017 Evening Update: MEET ASH. Ash was found as a stray by a good Samaritan in Romoland/Homeland, Riverside County. Unable to keep him (and unable to drive him to us), Tiffany asked CalWEAR for help to come get the dog so he wouldn’t be released back onto the streets (her dad said they couldn’t keep him).

ENTER NOVA. Nova, a volunteer for CalWEAR, was kind enough to take the entire morning out of her busy schedule to drive from Orange County all the way to Romoland, to pick Ash up. From there, she turned around and went to Orange Canyon Pet Clinic in Orange, CA, so we could get him scanned for a microchip.

DARLENE MAKES THE CALLS. Darlene at Dr. Black’s office spent her entire afternoon chasing down the contact information on Ash’s microchip, and was able to locate his dad. Meanwhile, Ash was kenneled in the back of the office, the gentle giant not making a single PEEP.

TRAVIS bought Ash as a puppy just two years ago. [Random side note: Travis had previously connected with CalWEAR about getting a dog from us, but we didn’t have the right dog for him at the time.] Unfortunately, last year, a sleep-walking episode ended up in Travis walking off the balcony of his home and landing head-first into the pavement. With a crushed skull and months of recovery time, Ash was reluctantly given to a friend who had more time to take care of him. Since that time, Travis never forgot about Ash and wondered if he would have been a good companion during recovery.

ASH freaked out when his dad came into the vet’s office at 5:30 PM today. There was NO DOUBT this dog missed his dad, and that his dad missed him. They are now going HOME, TOGETHER, and at the advice of Darlene, Travis is looking into getting Ash through the program to become a therapy dog.

To Tiffany, Deanna, Deborah, and everyone else who had a hand in Ash’s reunion with his dad, an eternal thank you from US.

Today was a GOOD day.

– With love and gratitude, Kim and rest of Team CalWEAR.

September 14, 2017 Morning Update:

WE DID IT!!!!!! One million thank yous to our CalWEAR community for rallying together and making it happen. Special shout-out goes to NOVA for sending her twins to the babysitter this morning so that she could drive all the way out to Romoland this morning to pick-up the Weimie stray.

Next up is a visit to one of our local vets to check for a microchip. If we can find a way to send him home, we will. If we can’t, we’ll go through the proper channels in the State of California to work with Riverside County Animal Control to verify no one’s looking for him.

If he stays with us, that’s okay, too. We’ll put him on a Woofwatchers Diet and get him vetted.

More to follow. With love and gratitude, Team CalWEAR. ❤️

September 13, 2017:

HELP!!!

ANYONE available to pick him up THIS EVENING and get him to CalWEAR in Orange County so that he can be checked for a microchip and (hopefully) find his way home?!

Meet Wiley

August 29, 2017 //  by Kim//  Leave a Comment

August 29, 2017:

SEEKING IMMEDIATE FOSTER:

A message from Wiley’s current owner-

Wiley is an older dog, his previous owner said he was eight but he may be older since he has arthritis and white on his muzzle. He needs to be the only dog or at least in a home without birds or small animals or cats or a hyper dog. He is a dog that is very loving and appreciates all you do for him, but ultimately is happiest lying on a soft orthopedic bed near a fan or AC. He loves to try to get our birds and sadly that is why he needs a home without those temptations in it. He will snuggle next to you on the couch and loves comfort and softness of anything he lies on. He has the most beautiful light hazel eyes.

August 19, 2017:

MEET WILEY. Wiley’s mamma acquired him through Craigslist about a week ago. Unfortunately, he keeps trying to get at her birds, so he now needs (another) new home. Wiley is good with people and other dogs. No cats, please. Holler if have room to adopt an older man. He’s sweet, calm, gentle, and comes with an oversized dog bed and crate. ❤️

Taylor’s Family Decides to Keep Her

January 22, 2017 //  by Kim//  Leave a Comment

January 22, 2017:

To the friends of CalWEAR who GRACIOUSLY offered your hearts and home to Taylor (the 11 year old Weim who needed a new home), our love and gratitude. For now, rest easy knowing that this one gets to stay “home,” after all. Here’s a message from her family.

My family has been in tears since receiving your email yesterday. As soon as the reality set-in regarding the potential foster outlet, we realized we simply cannot bring ourselves to surrender our sweet dog. As trying and as difficult as our life may be right now, we are going to continue making the most of our current situation so that we can keep our family whole.

My sincerest apologies for the time and effort we drew from you, your kind and loving organization, resources and network. If I may ask that you kindly remove all solicitations/information regarding Taylor from your site(s), we would be most appreciative.

Thank you for all that you do to help support families of Weimeraners and for your willingness to help our family during this difficult time, even if the end result was simply helping us come to the realization we cannot break-up our family!

January 15, 2017 Update # 2:

THANK YOU for the overwhelming support and commitment to foster or adopt Miss Taylor!! We are now waiting for Taylor’s owners to get back to us with a surrender date and time. If you’ve connected with us, we think we’ve replied back. 🙂 More to follow. With love and gratitude, Team CalWEAR. ❤️

January15, 2017 Update#1:
PLEA FOR FOSTER CARE:
CalWEAR has received the following message from the family of an 11-year old Weimaraner named Taylor. Taylor is housebroken, crate trained, good with people and other dogs. Cats are unknown. Please holler if you can provide this girl foster care on behalf of CalWEAR. We’re otherwise AT CAPACITY. Thanks! – Team CalWEAR
Why are you relinquishing this dog? “We are spread too thin with 2-kids, 2-working parents and a dog — we realize she is not living the life she deserves. As hard as it is to come to the decision to surrender her to another loving family, we know she will be getting more time, love and attention then we are able to provide at this time in our lives. Quite honestly, it is not fair to her and we are trying to do the right thing.”

What does the new family need to know? “Honestly, she is the best dog we have ever had. She is very obedient, loves to please, has a very loving and gentle nature about her. We have NEVER had a single issue with her chewing something she wasn’t supposed to, etc. She will on occasion bark (1-2 times) at the UPS/FedEx when they come to the house to drop off a package or if there is a lizard or something hanging out in her dog run. But otherwise, I would not consider her a “barker.” This decision is with a heavy heart, but we hate seeing her neglected and would love nothing more than to know she is getting as much love and attention as she deserves. She is a sweetheart, and we are trying to do everything we can to ensure she is getting more in her life than we can provide to her — which includes frequent walks, dog park trips, play time at home, etc.”

Rymer

January 11, 2017 //  by Kim//  Leave a Comment

11:00 AM update: Our volunteer arrived at the shelter only to find out that the Weim has been committed to another rescue; they won’t tell us who it is. We’ve asked to be placed in the system as a back-up so that if that rescue falls through, we can go back to get him. We’ll send another update if anything changes. – Team CalWEAR

Hello, friends of CalWEAR! Happy 2017. Checking in to let you know that we are aware of Rymer in Las Vegas and will be working on him this morning. Shelter opens at 11:00 AM. We have a volunteer to help in LV. Updates to follow. Thanks! – Team CalWEAR

Suspected Weimaraner at Devore Shelter

November 19, 2016 //  by Kim//  Leave a Comment

Friends of CalWEAR: Thank you for alerting us about the possible Weim at the Devore Shelter (part of a 55 dog raid). We swung by and saw him today. In person, he’s brown, has a longer coat, and a thick, curly tail. We think he’s a chocolate Labrador (there were many others that came in with him), so we’re hoping he either gets scooped up by a family when he becomes available, or a lab rescue calls for him. Onward to the next Weimaraner who needs us. Thanks again for looking out! – Team CalWEAR
