WINTER UPDATE:
“She’s learning how to play with the other dogs!!! And she chewed on her first antler this week, which she thinks is just. the. coolest. thing. ever. When she thinks I’m not paying attention to her, she’ll actually sneak up to me to see what I’m doing. But once I make eye contact, she slinks into the shadows again. We’re still working on the house breaking; my dining room rug is likely a goner. But on the bright side, she’s VERY GOOD about being in crates, both the wires and the Rough Tuffs. If she’s feeling threatened in any way, that’s the first place she goes to. Winter is still dragging a 5’ leash around because she’s still dodgy about having anyone come near her, but she’s MUCH better than she was last week. Hoping with all my might we continue to make improvement. She’s a beautiful, soulful girl, and she deserves to ultimately be in a home where she’ll feel safe for the rest of her life.”

WINTER UPDATE.
“I call bologna on the fact that Winter needed a new home because she ‘wasn’t getting along with other dogs.’ The first thing I noticed about her was that she had produced a lot of puppies. Maybe a few times. Her belly swings like they’re looking for puppies they once fed. Thanks to Nicky, her other foster mamma, we’ve also figured out that the address where she once lived… has a string of outdoor kennels.
Winter doesn’t know her name. She doesn’t know how to take treats. She doesn’t know what a toy is. She doesn’t know what a sofa is. She’s not housebroken. And when frightened, her default reflex is to bite. For the record, yeah, she HAS bitten me. Didn’t break my skin. But even if it did, I’m not mad at her. If I was freaked out of my mind and didn’t understand what the people around me were trying to get me to do, I’d probably bite, too.
It’s been a few days. I THINK I’ve finally seen a tail wag. And she lets me come up to her now without ducking or cowering.
It will take time. But we’ll get her to come around. And when we do, those soulful eyes will steal the heart of whoever gets her.”

MEET WINTER (right).
Winter came to CalWEAR last week after a family friend convinced her owner NOT to take her to the pound. Officially, the reason was because the other dogs in the household weren’t getting along with her.
Unofficially, we think it’s because she wasn’t getting along with the other dogs.
When we got to Winter (thank you Rhonda!), she had been living in a garage. A few days later, we transferred her into a foster home with Nicky and Mark, and their CalWEAR tripawd, ROCKY.
Day one was rough.
Winter was reactive, fearful, and eager to escape. She didn’t know what to make of her foster brother. She barked and barked and barked. No one got any sleep.
But then, today happened. Winter’s foster mom caught both dogs sharing the bed.
PROGRESS!!!!!!!
To minimize the propensity for future scuffles, CalWEAR is seeking a family for Winter where she can be the only dog in the household. Interested parties may reach us however you’d like! We’ll take phone call, text, messenger, or smoke signal.

Thanks to our volunteer and adopter, Rhonda, Winter is safe with CalWEAR. During this crazy busy seasone she gave up her day of shopping to transport Winter. ‘Tis the season for surrendering dogs - this week alone we are taking in 4! If you are able to help - transport, foster, or adopt, please let us know! Keep an eye on our webpage for our new intakes.
