Dusty

January 18, 2022 //  by Kim//  Leave a Comment

DUSTY came to CalWEAR as a stray so unfortunately, we don’t really know where she came from. What we do know, is that someone previously used an electronic collar on her because she has burn marks on her throat.

We also know that Dusty is young (probably about 2-3 years of age) and has had a litter of puppies. She doesn’t seem to have separation anxiety, is good in a crate, and good with other dogs. Under CalWEAR’s care, Dusty has been spayed and is up to date on shots.

When comfortable, Dusty is exuberant and has a lot of energy. She’s also very affectionate and loves sitting in someone’s lap. Unfortunately, it’s quite evident that Dusty was not well socialized in her formative months because she lacks basic manners and bite inhibition. This has resulted in Dusty being very mouthy and bitey; She loves to nibble at people and other animals.

When not comfortable, Dusty doesn’t know how to properly communicate with people around her, and unfortunately, now has a record of resorting to using her mouth and biting her human caretakers (so far, nothing too serious). Anyone interested in adopting Dusty must understand that she is a true rescue; she will only thrive if she gets a chance to be placed in an experienced, patient, and loving home (with no children) that understands her needs and isn’t afraid of her previous bite history.

To help Dusty have the greatest chance of success in her new home, 10 hours of professional dog training with an emphasis on behavioral modification will be donated to Dusty’s adoptive family. Training will include:

  • Basic manners
  • Positive reinforcement
  • Desensitization
  • Redirection
  • Counter-conditioning
  • Gamed-based play

If you’d like to meet Dusty she is fostered in the Glendora, CA area. Please submit an adoption application through our website so we can contact you. She’s a gorgeous girl!
