Bane

September 23, 2021 //  by Kim//  2 Comments

SEPTEMBER 27 UPDATE: BANE HAS BEEN ADOPTED!!!

—

BANE is another Covid victim where his owner lost their home and had to move in to a condo not allowing big dogs. He is truly missed! He had a 2 year old 2 legged sibling that adored him, making him good with the wee ones. He was going to doggy daycare making him well socialized. He has a natural tail and is a beauty! Bane was adopted a couple weeks ago and found that the resident dog, being a senior and cranky, didn’t like Bane’s playfullness. Bane, being a big dog, and her, a terrier were not melding well. Bane could not understand a Senior dogs unwillingness to play and the Senior dog lashed out at him.He would do very well with another four legged companion more his size to hang out with. He is also a people loving dog…loves to be where his people are. The FIRST step to adopting this awesome companion is to fill out an easy online adoption questionnaire at www.calwear.org/adopt/ Once that form is received we respond immediately. Be sure to put BANE as dog of interest toward bottom of form.

Here is new email from current owner: He will be 2 years old in November- he’s tall and weighs about 95lbs. He knows basic command, 100% housebroken, walks very well on a leash and he settles down at night. He hasn’t chewed anything he shouldn’t during his time with us. Sometimes he gets excited to see guests and jumps up- but that is easily stopped. He is still a puppy- he loves to play and he plays rough. Unfortunately this is too much for our Rat Terrier.

Update: Shakira has been adopted!!!

MEET SHAKIRA.

Two year old Shakira is new to rescue so her photo not that great. Owner had to give up Shakira and her Boxer brother. She does well with most dogs but will have to be introduced if there is a resident dog in adoptive home. We don’t know much about her other than her owners moved into a place they couldn’t have the dogs. Her previous owners raised Shakira with their kids and the Boxer. The dogs were kept outside during the day and allowed inside with the family at night. If you might be in interested in learning more about this little gem, please first fill out our adoption questionnaire so we can see if you are a match for her.

Bender

August 9, 2021 //  by Kim//  3 Comments

UPDATE – BENDER HAS BEEN ADOPTED!!!

MEET BENDER.

BENDER is one of SEVEN Weimaraners confiscated by Riverside County Animal Control in early August in an open case of abuse and neglect. On Sunday, August 8th, he busted out and made his way into foster care. (CalWEAR is working on getting the other six Weimaraners out of the shelter ASAP).

Immediately upon arrival, we figured out that that BENDER was GREAT with his four month old canine foster sister and a seven year old human foster sister. After about nine rounds of shampoo, the crusted grime on his coat finally came off. (!!!!) On his first night at his foster home, BENDER slept the whole night in the crate and didn’t ask to be let out to potty, at all.

BENDER is approximately 5-6 years old, gray, sweet, friendly, easy-going, and just wants to be loved. He’s currently underweight (from not being fed on a regular basis) but has recently discovered the joy of accepting treats from people. Due to COVID-19 and a current shortage of vet staff, BENDER was not neutered prior to his release, so this will be first on our agenda for him. He is, however, current on his shots.

Interested parties may submit an adoption application and meet with BENDER this week. Thank you!

Charlie and Willow

June 22, 2021 //  by Kim//  1 Comment

INCOMING!!!! A rare find… TWO beautiful young female Weimaraner siblings with long hair!!! That’s right!!!! Pretty glowing take your choice of blue or gray. Raised together and would really like to stay together if possible, but separate homes for each dog will also be considered. Both in their not so terrible 2’s. Charlie is the gray and Willow is the blue. Nothing wrong with these two… another victim of Pandemic forcing changing living arrangements. Looking for forever home. Both are good with dogs and kids but NO CATS please if you value their existence.

Applications already submitted take priority if it’s a match but if you’re interested and want more information, submit your adoption application at www.calwear.org/adopt/.

Mimi

June 7, 2021 //  by Kim//  4 Comments

UPDATE: MIMI HAS BEEN ADOPTED!!!!!

MEET MIMI.

MIMI is an 18 month old Weimaraner puppy who likes all adults, kids, infants, dogs, and cats. She’s also housebroken and spayed. Unfortunately, MIMI was also recently diagnosed with not one, but TWO (unrelated) illnesses.

Under the care of cardiologist Sara Johns, DVM at Sage Center in Concord, CA, MIMI was found to have a loud heart murmur and congenital heart defect called tricuspid dysplasia. In short, one of her heart valves didn’t form right when she was born and now leaks into and enlarges the right side of her heart. Separately, MIMI also has moderate to severe pulmonary hypertension, which leads to shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, exercise intolerance, weakness, and fainting.

MIMI is currently on a medication called Vetmedin (pimobendan) which helps to improve her heart function and buys her some time before her heart starts failing her. CalWEAR currently has this medication filled at Costco for approximately $75/month. She is also on a monthly insurance plan with a premium of $83 (which will stay with her).

MIMI’s conditions require that she lives near or at sea level (she CANNOT travel to or live at high elevation). A home with cooler temperatures will be very beneficial for her. MIMI also needs a home where she can play but have moderate exercise; she should not participate in strenuous activities.

MIMI is expected to live without additional complications for the next five years. Unfortunately, her doctors are not confident that she’ll make it to old age as her heart may give out before then. Please contact CalWEAR if you might be willing to consider hosting MIMI despite her special needs.

MIMI is currently fostered by Charlie in Pasadena, CA.

REX

June 2, 2021 //  by Kim//  3 Comments

***UPDATE***REX IS ON HIS WAY TO HIS FOSTER HOME***THANK YOU #TEAMCALWEAR!!!!!***

MEET REX, who is now searching for an adoptive home.

REX comes to CalWEAR after a brief stay at the San Diego County Bonita Shelter (Southern California).

Staff’s initial impression of REX was, “Wow, he’s a nice dog! Loved being talked to petted. Super social. Wagged his tail when getting attention. But also… walked into walls.” 😳

As it turned out, REX is suspected to have some retinal degeneration. In other words, he can’t see.

Did he get lost? Is that how he ended up at the shelter?

Thankfully, REX was microchipped and a quick phone call was made to notify his owner that he was safe. No problem. Owner made an appointment to come get his boy.

Unfortunately, the appointment time came and went, and REX’S owner didn’t show up to collect him. Then the shelter was ghosted altogether.

REX was abandoned by his family. 😢 While we don’t know why, we suspect it’s because they are going through ruff times, themselves, and aren’t in a position to take him home.

So here’s where CalWEAR comes in.

REX needs our help. First and foremost, he needs a soft place to land. A temporary foster home where we can get him cleaned up and back in tip-top shape. Then, we’ll need to find him the BESTEST. HOME. EVER, because he deserves that, and so much more.

Thank you!!!

– With love and gratitude, Team CalWEAR ❤️

Billy

June 1, 2021 //  by Kim//  6 Comments

UPDATE: BILLY HAS BEEN ADOPTED!!!!!!

MEET BILLY. He’s four months old, affectionate, trusting, beautiful, and tender.

BILLY was bred by someone in Los Angeles County. No one wanted to buy him because he “walked funny.” The veterinarian quoted the breeder thousands of dollars to run diagnostic tests and then suggested he be euthanized if the breeder couldn’t afford the bill. To make a very long story short, BILLY ultimately made his way to rescue. (Thank you Rachel for the assist!!! 👊🏼😘🙌🏼)

How incredibly sad that BILLY’s condition was 💯 avoidable had his breeder known there was a simple DNA test for spinal dysraphism (SD) and was educated enough to make breeding decisions accordingly.

Fortunately for BILLY, SD is not a death sentence, and for the lucky family who gets to bring him home, they will have many many years of joy and laughter with him.

Our hooligans are showing BILLY tonight what it means to be an indoor dog. Couches, pillows and beds, oh my!!! 🐶 Hopefully the coconut oil treatment he’s getting will heal him of the elbow callouses he already has from doing time on LA concrete.

More tomorrow. Tonight, we snuggle. ✌🏼  – Kim, Billy’s Foster Mom

America & Liberty

June 1, 2021 //  by Kim//  6 Comments

UPDATE: BOTH DOGS HAVE BEEN ADOPTED.

MEET AMERICA and LIBERTY.

Both girls are three years old, spayed, housebroken and crate trained. Unfortunately, their mom is moving to a place where they can’t come, too.

AMERICA and LIBERTY are house dogs, know basic commands (sit, shake, kisses), are great together, and love playing with squeaky toys. Their favorite thing to do is cuddle, sit on a human’s lap, and give out kisses. They are great with children and other dogs. We don’t know if either would get along with cats. Please contact us if you would like to meet AMERICA, LIBERTY, or both girls. They do not have to be adopted together.

Thank you!

Beau

May 26, 2021 //  by Kim//  2 Comments

Update: BEAU has been adopted!

MEET BEAU. Beau is a wonderful 4 year old M (neutered, chipped).

Beau has had formal training and has good house manners, (however can’t be completely trusted with food on the
counters).  Needs reinforcement and a true pack leader for this super strong high anxiety boy. He has also shown some
separation anxiety (pacing, breaking out in hives and occasionally barking). Beau would prefer a house where he can be
included in most ALL activities where someone is home most of the time.  Someone who understands his anxiety and can work with him not punish him.  He walks well on a leash, tends to be rambunctious about taking off and will need some emphasis on what his boundaries are.  Once reminded he is a great walker who needs a strong knowledgeable handler.

He is a fantastic car rider. Beau loves going on walks and has a great foundation in training. He is a very smart boy who
has quickly learned the house rules and knows all obedience commands in his current foster home. Beau does well with other dogs after proper introduction.  He is super strong and not known to be graceful, which may be a challenge to be cautious around small children. Not too cat friendly.  SIZE – Above average breed standard (90 lbs).

Update: STONE has been adopted!

MEET STONE.

STONE is a typical needy seven year old Weimaraner whose owner isn’t able to give her the time and attention that she needs. Also in true Weimaraner fashion, STONE loves to be the center of attention. Raised with three small children, STONE is a great family dog. She also tips the intelligence scale by opening doors and unlocking sliders.

STONE is crate trained, spayed, and housebroken. Her shots are up to date. Please inquire with us if you’d like to meet her!
